Adan Yabal: WARDI Distributes Emergency Food to IDPs Fleeing Conflict
Gubadley district, Somalia – Thursday 24 April, 2025 – Following weeks of intense armed conflict in Adan Yabal district, Middle Shabelle region, thousands of families have been forced to flee their homes in search of safety. The growing influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs) has put immense pressure on neighboring districts, particularly the Gubadley district in the Banadir region, where most IDP camps are now stretched beyond capacity.

On Wednesday, WARDI distributed emergency dry food items including rice, sugar and vegetable oil to 150 newly displaced families in Gubadley. This emergency intervention was aimed at alleviating the immediate food needs of some of the most vulnerable households affected by the conflict.
However, the situation remains deeply concerning. The delayed onset of the Gu’ rains has brought flash floods across several regions, compounding an already fragile humanitarian situation. Host communities, who themselves have limited resources, are now grappling with the dual challenges of displacement and climate change shocks.
“We have a large internally displaced community, and the number of people fleeing conflicts in Jowhar, Balcad, and Adan Yabal to this district in the recent days has increased exponentially,” said Gubadley District Commissioner Abdullahij Noor Mohamud.
His comments came during a courtesy visit to his office by WARDI CEO Hussein Dhubow Abdi and Area Manager Ismail Abdi Hassan, who reiterated WARDI’s commitment to supporting the affected population.

Despite facing significant funding constraints resulting from recent cuts to humanitarian financing pipelines, WARDI has launched an emergency response plan focused on saving lives and protecting the dignity of displaced communities, particularly women, girls, and children.
“We remain steadfast in our mission to save lives and protect vulnerable communities,” said WARDI CEO Hussein Dhubow. “Our field teams are currently conducting multi-sectoral needs assessments to inform a coordinated, context-sensitive response that reflects the urgent realities on the ground.”
WARDI strongly believes in the mantra of togetherness and is thus inviting additional support from donors, partners, and well-wishers even as the organization continues to scale up its emergency response efforts. The growing need far outweighs the available resources, and time is of the essence to prevent further loss of life and deterioration of the humanitarian situation.
